there are unique aspects of this new immigration detention regime, but as someone with an incarcerated sibling, many of the tactics are, sadly, familiar. international humanitarian law, supreme court rulings, federal rules and regulations, basic decency — all are optional in our prison system.
Torture is a feature of life in thousands of US jails and prisons. It’s often blamed on “guards,” but someone had to design this contraption, build it, plan its use, and run it up the chain of command. Judges and lawyers had to create a legal regime where this stuff pervades for decades.

Information environment has reached its grotesque conclusion in that there is a very real killer out there who has not been identified, apprehended, or investigated, a detail practically inconsequential to nearly every commentator’s purposes.

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

Alright, I think people knew of the tariff pause and traded it beforehand.

You can see before Trump posted "buy" on Truth Social, traders opened $QQQ $TQQQ and $SPY calls

RIGHT BEFORE THE NEWS, someone opened $SPY 509 calls, expiring TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those calls are up 2100% in one hour.

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

@aoc.bsky.social is the best at this and it's not even close. You really can tell she is a millennial; we grew up as the internet did. That's such valuable trolling experience and not something any other generation can replicate.
AOC: It's really because Republicans— they’re very thin skinned and they're very sensitive, and their feelings are very easily hurt. And so they have to vote on censure resolutions.

Most members of the public have little reason to be aware of 18F, or will understand what its loss signifies. So this post tries to capture that, by including the voices of those who worked there. First, from @waldo.net

say it...

out

loud
important to say aloud, even if it seems hyperbolic or makes you sound like a crank, that this is a grave crisis — the constitution has been suspended so a corrupt president and unelected billionaire can illegally cut programs to benefit themselves and their ultra-rich donors and cronies.
Elon Musk is now presiding over the cabinet meeting. They're not beating the co-president allegations. (And co-president might be putting it charitably for Trump.)

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.
