a brief respite in the wind over the last few days allowed us a packed weekend of water based activities. Beginning to get a bit cold for me to dive though

~ programmer art warning ~

It's taken all day to figure out, but ive put together a rudimentary chunk loading system. So now you can drop onto the islands and run around.

Some serious refactoring required though and a rabbit whole of chunk generation and upscaling to come

Did i miss the boat on #PitchYaGame?

Maybe but this is Diabaig, an old school ascii roguelike. Simple to start but tricky to finish. Use nothing but the resources you find, to tackle the large number of unique creatures, and best the dragon at the bottom.

Really pleased with the first attempt at generating these wee islands. Very early days but a promising start. Excuse the primitive rendering #procgen

mixing more noise functions for strange effects, this one is a bit spooky

Playing around with noise functions. Not sure what these will be for but I thought they were interesting

Find myself in cool places but can't help about thinking about procedural terrain generation 🤔

I generally hold quite a poor view of deer here in Scotland for what they represent with ecologically mismanaged land.
However, this particular red deer stag was quite impressively and atomspherically roaring up the glen all day

A little tweak to this. It now attracts the player towards items and creatures. However, it might still be a bit naive, as it has no checks on whether the item was just dropped or the player is ignoring/fleeing the creature

Auto explore?

I've never much liked it because you give up all exploration of the world to some robot. But I'm reworking the auto commands in diabaig as part of a bug fix update and figured i would add it in. It's quite fun zipping around the dungeon!

Minor bug fix update coming soon #roguelikedev

Second wind!

Diabaig sees a surge in download rate! No idea what happened but its very exciting none the less. Still seeing so many nice comments and messages coming in, its really heartwarming

A pre-thesis defence swim. Maybe I could just stay here with the seals instead. I can see how selkies draw misguided people into the sea

This grey seal gave me a could check out at the surface. We swim with each other for about 5 minutes before it moved on

I passed 200 downloads of diabaig this morning. Absolutely blown away by the level of excitement about my little terminal game, it has exceeded all expectations I had.
Had so much great feedback that it has been just such a joy to read

Release day! Here is Diabaig, a traditional #ascii #roguelike.

conornally.itch.io/diabaig

Descend through #procedural floors facing increasing adversity and creatures to defeat the dragon at the bottom. Make your way back out with only the resources you find along the way.

Just trying lots of playthroughs of Diabaig. Little bits of touching up and polishing.

I got wrecked by this early level treasure room. Charged in barbarically and hadn't realised I was being followed. More than a few surprises awauted inside that I didn't expect.

Diabaig is hard. I have never managed to beat it. A few people have come close enough to believe it's possible.

But finding the balance between challenging and unforgiving, but not feeling unfair, is really difficult.

With this yeti. They are easy to beat if you don't get surprised, like I did

Baby dragons in my #roguelike Diabaig can't control their fire. This leads to whole rooms being engulfed in flames when they hiccup.

Raggle the Haggler, a 'friendly' face deep in Diabaig. Not sure he has your best interests in mind but he will sort you out with missing supplies

Picking back up this project from lockdown. Diabaig, a traditional #roguelike in the terminal. Originally designed to be a simple game, scope creep has expanded it to 30 levels and 50+ creatures, with bosses and mini bosses.

It's been on the back burner for years, hopefully I'll release it soon
