Dandelion flower honey - a great substitute for vegans or anyone who is immuno-suppressed and so can't eat honey. You need fifty flower heads - widely available now so you won't be taking too many from the pollinators

A bumblebee can only fly for about 40 mins between feeding. But we've lost 97% of our wiłdflower meadows. So each nectar-rich flower you plant in a windowbox or in your garden or community green spaces could be the pit stop that saves a bee 🐝

The annual #incredibleedible #Barnet seed swap kicks off the growing year with the opportunity to try growing something new and unexpected!
There are just a few days left until our annual seed swap this Sunday (2 to 4pm at St John's URC, EN5 1RH)!

Could 2025 be the year you grow more of your own food?

🥔NEW for 2025 - We'll be trialling selling a few seed potatoes for the first time. Come early to avoid disappointment.🥔

A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. Please repost if you agree 🌳

If you discover a hibernating bumblebee while digging in your garden or allotment this winter, try to avoid disturbing her, and loosely re-cover her so she can hit the snooze button until spring. More advice from @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social at www.bumblebeeconservation.org

Food vs. Nature: the role of community food growing
Does food growing and wildlife habitat have to be in competition? Or, can our limited urban green spaces support both food and nature?

Happy #SocialistSunday to all who celebrate! We made this funny Christmas song to remind ourselves we can show our loved ones we care about them in ways that feel more appropriate to the times we're living in than just hitting the usual overspend button youtu.be/12FyJyMBt90?...

There are some plants that I remove before they get too big and tough or numerous. At #Knepp #rewilded project, this impulse to intervene was referred to as 'the call to care' - a call which we humans must try to manage sustainably. Here are the Alkenet leaves on the compost. I drown the roots.

At this time of year a lot of people talk about 'clearing' and 'tidying up' but we like to let things mellow and allow for forage and shelter ...

We also learned how many 20th #Finchley #Cubs can circle this wonderful ancient hollow oak = six + one inside the hollow! This tree is on the Allotment path - Totteridge & Whetstone end - it is over 300-years-olf and is one of four old oaks that would have been boundary trees.

We enjoyed the lively company of the 20th #Finchley #Cubs today on our Nature Walk & Litter Pick - happy to see very little litter on public paths through #Whetstone #Stray Allotments & on the #Dollis #Valley #Greenwalk Lots of great questions and spots including a tiny woodmouse and a kestrel.

We can't wait to plant new native hedges in Friary Park. Hawthorn, Hazel and Guelder Rose will support a wide range of insects and other wildlife, and create a barrier against noise and air pollution from the busy roads beside the park. Bring your spades and your friends along, we'd love your help!
