My doctor asked me at my latest appointment if I’d heard of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome before and I had a bit but didn’t think it applied because my elbows and wrists are normal but she just looked at me and my skin and my dislocatable fingers and went
“I think you should at least look into it.”

Cyno smiled, shaking his head in chagrin and retrieving Alhaitham's cloak from its place on the coat rack in the corner. He held it out and Alhaitham put his arms through the armholes, letting it settle over both shoulders for once. "Would you like to walk home with me?" Alhaitham asked, putting a few things from his desk into his belt pouch, "I can't think of anything specific to talk about but I am told that friends shouldn't only see each other at work. I have been doing poorly at this." "Well," Cyno began, following Alhaitham out of the office. "I did have another, not-work-related question." "What is it?" "Why are you so big? I've seen pictures, in your house, of your Grandmother and your father when he was young. Both of them seemed to be closer to my height than yours. How did you get so tall?" Cyno asked, teasingly, but in a very serious voice. Cyno said everything in a very serious voice. Alhaitham, for the first time since Cyno had known him, laughed. Cyno thought it might be his new favorite sound.

So Alhaitham has friends now, in Nilou and Tighnari, and a famous mercenary from the desert that Kaveh had yet to meet himself, and the strange man with the strange hat that now worked as Lord Kusanali's secretary of sorts. And then there was Cyno. Cyno, who, as far as Kaveh knew, had never been impressed with anything; once called Alhaitham's combat skills 'commendable for a scholar. Cyno, who, at Lambad's, now rambled in a manner of subdued excitement about an exchange of word play that 'should have been expected from the brightest of Haravatat'. Cyno, who Alhaitham let reset his shoulder when it dislocated after an incident that was not Kaveh's fault led to him falling over a railing on the tree of wisdom. Cyno, who Alhaitham loaned his headset to when a head injury gave the General Mahamatra an unexpected migraine. Kaveh didn't know what to make of it.

I know this first hand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and sabateurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

Say what you want about TikTok but when I was sad that I couldn’t dye my hair blue back in 2020, hundreds of people duetted to show me videos of their cool hair colors so I could enjoy it vicariously through others. Someone I didn’t know drew art of me with pastel blue hair. I’m gonna miss it.
