And, among many other flaws, it feels like the game forgets about how the original show was able to balance all of this.

Like of the core cast, Toph is the only one who I feel like her arc isn't *as* big, but she honestly felt like the member of the cast who had herself the most put together, and even then still had her moments of char growth and change.

Like, Zuko famously has his face turn arc, Katara grows to become a master and deal with her trauma, Sokka slowly grows from a bit of a meat head who thinks he needs to prove himself as a warrior to the support.

The thing is that, the first show famously balances multiple character arcs very well and helps make sure that everyone gets good screen time and focus. Korra doesn't do it as well(TBF, it's seasons are much shorter than the last airbender's)

The Craig films were a reboot! Just do another reboot!

It is that simple!

Avoid games that require maps.

I have found that some of my friends are more easily able to digest crunchy games in PBP than Live Games.

Maps however are a pain to deal with.

We think of larger health pools as inherently less fragile, but you need to look at everything else to really make that call.
November 10, 2025 at 1:11 PM
A PC in a game where they have 50 health but die at 0, and where that same pistol does 15 damage need to be alot more careful. 3 shots will put them on death's door, where something much more minor could put them down for good.
November 10, 2025 at 1:11 PM
Or an alternative...

A PC in a game where they have 15 health and dies at -5 and a pistol does 3 damage needs to be a bit careful, 5 shots will put em down and maybe even dying, but one or two shots ain't the worst thing.

(Holy shit it's 8 AM I should get to bed.)

Like, a d100 isn't what makes things scary. A specific mechanic isn't what makes things scary.

Large health pools that are easy to wipe out will make you feel more fragile than a low health pool that's hard to hurt. But we often think that low health=fragile
November 10, 2025 at 12:56 PM
*lost not low
November 10, 2025 at 12:53 PM
If players have 20-30 health and no damage penalties, and a gun does 3 damage, then a gun is something that won't scare em much.

10-15 health, and a gun that does 1d6 damage, and penalties for low health, that makes things alot scarier. Even a glancing blow may make things rougher for them.
November 10, 2025 at 12:52 PM
There is also the fact that the next question is "what are the mechanics surrounding the dice?" Tanky PCs are harder to make scared than fragile ones
November 10, 2025 at 12:48 PM
(I run a TTRPG campaign using that exact set up, and there have been times that a bad dice roll on a players part and a good roll on my part basically devastates them)
November 10, 2025 at 12:47 PM
Why would it be better than, say, a d6 system where evens are successes, and 6s can be two successes, and damage is the net successes between offense and defenseThat can be, from personal experience, very swingy in combat, and make things very lethal.
November 10, 2025 at 12:46 PM
But anyway, like... OK, if you want things to be swingy, why specifically a d100? D20, d10, d5, d4 all are fairly swingy and have fairly easy to understand probabilities. What makes a d100 in specific *better*
November 10, 2025 at 12:44 PM
(Also, you are going to have different probabilities between using 2d10 to replicate a d100, or an actual d100.)
November 10, 2025 at 12:43 PM
I saw someone argue that the swingyness of a d100 helps contribute to horror to try to shut thus guy down, and again, not the point the guy was making, but also like a d100 is not an inherently better die for horror.
November 10, 2025 at 12:41 PM
I think the reason why people are so caught up on it is that there a bunch of people who want to prove they are smarter than this guy, and are not thinking through what words he actually used.
November 10, 2025 at 12:16 PM
Certain mechanics or dice will gear the game in certain ways. Which is what the post is saying. But everyone is fucking caught up on the idea he is saying that 2d6 and 1d12 are the same thing, when that's not the case.
November 10, 2025 at 12:13 PM
I use 5e as an example since 2d10 and d20 are pretty easy for me to calculate odds wise, but going back to the original post, the point is that the mechanic or dice used to roll are not inherently better, it depends on what the designer is going for.
November 10, 2025 at 12:11 PM
AC also would need to be rebalanced, what could one point be a 25% chance for a martial to hit is now a 15% chance.

I don't like 5e that much nowadays, but I can recognize it was built around a d20, and changing that would fuck up the math so much.
