“It denigrates the labor of people who are front-facing and student-facing."

People who answer phone calls, clean the cafeteria, schedule appointments, pay bills, run food pantries, create extracurriculars are all staff. When staff are cut, so are services to the entire campus community.
Buyouts are intended to be a humane way to cut costs. But they can hurt morale and have unintended consequences, as one campus in Pennsylvania is learning after losing 40 percent of its staff. chroni.cl/43rahLs
Penn State Offered Buyouts. At This Campus, 40 Percent of Staff Raised Their Hands.
Faculty and staff members at Pennsylvania State University at New Kensington kicked off the fall semester with a sense of dread.

Not only is education not a solution to class stratification, but our educational systems participate in it in an untold number of ways. I've worked at CC, a mid-size regional public, and a selective private. The differences are obvious and striking- more money = more opportunity.

"policy makers have ignored viable practical training" 💯
It's slim pickings in voc ed. If society wants more trades, there has to be more skin in the game from both public and private sectors. Voc ed requires pricey facilities and instruction, and if we want nice things we have to pay for them.
Is it better to be told you’re not cut out for college, and guided toward training that may cost less and lead to a solid job? Or is it better to shoot for a bachelor’s degree, with the risk that you might fail and be worse off? chroni.cl/3EnQELc
Should Everyone Go to College?
For poor kids, “college for all” isn’t the mantra it was meant to be. The national push may be doing more harm than good.

I love midwesterners. It's 35° and flurrying outside, and this lady in the hallway is wearing birkenstock clogs with no socks. It's a push and pull between the practical and the impractical symbolized in footwear.

There's been apprenticeship buzz in #highered and workforce dev for years, but employers have to commit time, money, and training know-how to create the openings and pathways to them-- education can't do it for them. www.npr.org/2024/12/17/n...
Apprenticeships are a trending alternative to college — but there's a hitch
Apprenticeships are becoming a popular alternative to college as a career path. But demand is outpacing the supply of employers who offer them.

Now that it's "walk with your hood up and your head down" weather on campus, it's easy to spot who is from the midwest and who isn't based on the reactions of folks nearly bumping into each other. Ope, sorry! #highered #ohio

Movies should aim for a 90 to 105 minute air time. Anything approaching 120 minutes should be absolutely epic. Nothing in theaters should be over 150. That's too long!
What's some objectively minor hill you had committed to die on in the Before Times that you'll still die in defense of, dammit?

e.g., Dead Poets Society is a terrible movie to begin with and a deeply toxically terrible movie about teaching.
