This is a challenge! I work with my team how to balance the pain and sorrow that comes with studying our discipline to focus on the joy that still existed. Humans have always had joy within the fight for justice - and hopefully, by showing this in our classrooms, students take that into their lives!
Honestly this is such a running joke in my history department. We were asked by an instructional coach once if there was something "nice" from the period we were teaching we could hang an SEL lesson on and we just stared blankly for a moment before shaking our heads.
Not Saeed's main point, but I wonder how much of U.S. cultural resistance to doing the reading/homework and getting smarter in general (note: not resistance to good grades—those are 2 diff. things) is a response to the pain it brings. Humans have done some bad things, and it hurts to learn about it.

I’m convinced the “do audiobooks count as reading?” argument all derives from those mid-90s summer reading pizza challenges.

Folks - we’re all in our 30s and 40s now. It’s no longer a competition.

Go buy your favorite pie with your adult money and let people enjoy books however they want.

Coaching win today:

A teacher wanted to increase engagement and classroom community. We created a plan to increase the use of turn and talks to give students time to “chew” on content.

Observed today and the classroom was ELECTRIC with discussion, community, and laughter! #EduCoach

If we were re-designing the education system from scratch, one thing I’d love to see is the destruction of the linear career ladder out of the classroom.

Cyclical would be better, I think.

Out-of-classroom positions, such as building leaders? Temporary. Then back into the classroom for a stretch.

This won’t be a safe space for long. Those same agitators we’re fleeing in that other place NEED our outrage & engagement to be impactful. They’ll arrive soon. Block immediately and never engage with anyone who slips thru. It’s gonna be on us to maintain whatever peace can be found on a social app.
