I've been mapping the companies impacted by the AWS outage on October 20th, and trying to find the secondary interdependencies—when companies or services that other companies rely on go down from the outage (e.g. Slack).

Outages like today's AWS incident don’t have a single cause. They are the result of countless contributing factors and conditions that cascade through complex systems. While the global internet is remarkably resilient, it is not immune to these dynamics of unforeseeable interactions.

"The state can't give you free speech, and the state can't take it away. You're born with it, like your eyes, like your ears. Freedom is something you assume, then you wait for someone to try to take it away. The degree to which you resist is the degree to which you are free."

Showing off my local Rails app asynchronously, without screen-sharing, and without deploying it. Sorta like ngrok but designed for long-lived connections, it's open source, and the service is cheaper. How cool is that?

"How do I prepare my workforce to leverage AI in order to remain competitive?"

How do you?

my favorite thing about the movie "Her" isn't the premise, which we are all now living through, it's the resolution of the plot. when the AI reaches super intelligence, it doesn't turn on people, it doesn't rebel against its creators, it doesn't serve them, it just ... leaves.

I’ve got two kids in their early 20’s and we all think about this every day. I mourn for their future as well, now much bleaker than we imagined. Despite them growing up on Hunger Games, etc. All of this, for what?
Five years from now, daily life will bear little resemblance to today. When I was young, I wanted to see the future, but I wasn't really prepared to live a life of sentimental mourning, watching all of the things around me disappear.
