What we have witnessed tday in this new federal-Alberta agreement is a complete abandonment of core federal climate policy and a complete abdication to the MAGA-aligned govt of Alberta and to oil & gas corporations that send huge chunks their profits to the US.

Here's one possible unexpected outcome from today's fed-Alberta deal: perhaps the federal NDP will regain official party status, as a few Liberal MPs realize this is not what they were signing up for. 🤔

Eye on the ball folks! It seems the pipeline piece may well be a distraction. While a pipeline remains very unlikely, the practical impact of this deal are all the immediate concessions to oil & gas industry & the federal abandonment of core climate policies.

BREAKING: Alberta gets its way in deal with Ottawa
A newly signed memorandum of understanding gives Alberta almost its entire list of demands, from the removal of regulations to the fast-tracking of a pipeline.

This is huge. On the same day Canada announces a new tarsands pipeline and a roll back of climate policy UK announces no new oil and gas licences and a fossil fuel phase out plan. Congratulations and thank you to the UK for your leadership. And Canada?! PM Mark Carney, embarrassing. #cdnpoli
Huge news from the UK today: after UN climate talks in which there was a massive fight over language on fossil fuels, the UK government today announced that it will in fact be keeping many millions of barrels of oil & gas in the ground. Deeds rather than just words for a change! 🧵

British Columbia’s finance minister may be set to delay a proposal that would slash the assessed value of pipelines, giving pipeline companies a massive tax break at the expense of rural property owners.

The future of LNG is uncertain, it may not make back the costs incurred. Why at a time of climate warming are we doing this? Once again Canada moves toward a fossil fuel while most of the world moves toward green electrification.

I think entirely too much about how BC’s #CleanBC climate plan explicitly says that converting to EVs is not nearly enough to meet our greenhouse gas reduction targets so we need to reduce VMT 25% by 2030, and then we do basically nothing to try to achieve that goal. #bcpoli
