I know a lot of footage and commentary is swirling about today but it’s important to convey that the people who gathered outside that ICE garage in lower Manhattan were *so* ten toes down focused.

This person who gets maced and just calmly flips the bird & keeps going is *quintessential.*

My husband Ken just became a Living Kidney Donor, to help a much loved friend. As an "Advanced Donation", Ken’s left kidney went to an unknown recipient, and when our friend Ei needs one, he will be scheduled for his own transplant.
So - his donation saved two lives. Ken’s home & feeling great.

RIP Masohiro Shinoda died today at 94, one of Japan's great New Wave film directors. His ice cold and pitch-black gangster noir Pale Flower (1964) has been a favorite of mine for many years.

In today's breathless article explaining how our President Musk stands to make billion$ in government contracts for his private Space X company, the NY Times says "his supporters say he has the best technology". I'll bet they do, that's why they're called his supporters, THANKS, senile news org!

The Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954)

Landmark avant-garde masterpiece depicting a ritualistic costume party. Seldom has a film taken such delight in its own freakiness. Paved the way for John Waters and David Lynch.

Starring Marjorie Cameron

Directed by Kenneth Anger - BOTD in 1927

Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club extravaganza at the Grammy's made me smile from ear to ear. West Hollywood rodeo clowns in assless chaps with KISS makeup is the energy we need. I am also so happy for Beyoncé's wins, Cowboy Carter was MY album of the year.

Criterion Channel has a gorgeous series up called Argentine Noir. Six stylish, twisty Perón-era films. I love 1950's B&W films with Expressionist lighting, social commentary and complicated psychological mayhem and these movies have it all. This still is from 1952's "The Beast Must Die". #filmnoir

I will say that, as a member of a minority that is simply a natural human variation, it does comfort me some that the fascists could drive every single last one of us out of public life... and we'd just keep being born and creating new subcultures and undergrounds.

We always have, we always will.

GOP House voted yesterday to ban trans women from school sports; NCAA president says there are "less than 10" trans women among >500,000 college athletes. So, most "federally funded trans athletes" being banned are just kids eager to play with other kids at school. Cruelty for it's own sake.

Seeing Igor Levit perform Bach, Brahms, Beethoven this afternoon at Carnegie Hall. Levit is not only one of the world’s great pianists, he’s also a very outspoken pro-democracy & human rights activist. A great example of “artist as human being”.

We just saw Sanaz Toossi's play "English", set in a TOEFL classroom in Iran in 2008. This play won the Pulitzer prize in 2023. It captured a lot of the agony & pleasure of trying to inch your way forward in the maze of a new language. I highly recommend this one, it’s at Roundabout on 42nd St.
