I think everyone should read this piece. Not to agree with it, or for some takeaway, nor even one of the myriad bon mots, but because it helps you think about what it is you truly believe. In its own terms, it’s the opposite of mediocre.

Would love to hear @montanaskeptic.bsky.social’s take.

One impact of the NSF freeze: They fund the small nonprofit, EarthScope, that manages seismic and GPS stations used worldwide to detect and warn of earthquakes and navigate autonomous vehicles.

EarthScope can maybe make payroll this week. A prolonged freeze could see stations fail.

If people knew how often health corporations overcharged taxpayers, their heads would spin. I worked on one case where they were gouging active duty service members by overcharging for breast pumps. Just one of thousands of examples media.defense.gov/2023/Jul/31/...

Another wrinkle is that the property values themselves changes the math significantly. Increased fire risk, yes, of course, but bad policy lead to inflated property values with things like Prop 13 effectively preventing the market or govt planning from adapting
easy to read "insurers stopped covering homes in California right before these fires" as something sinister, but from covering this industry, I gotta say I think it's the opposite: no one is more aware of increased risk due to climate change than insurers

Insurers dropped fire coverage for California homes months ago. Now, wildfires are claiming more houses in Los Angeles.
Some insurers have scaled back their coverage in California because of wildfires over the past few years, creating a challenge for rebuilding.

Thanks to everyone for checking in. We're fine. Many of our friends are not fine. I tried my best to describe what's happening with the fires and what LA needs to do now
