Discord messages written by me: it seems to me like a really important part is finding some way to make your entities "distinct" to the player so they can form relationships with them like something I noticed about Cult of the Lamb is that I really struggle to even remember any facts about my cult members they have two or three random traits, a name, an age, and appearance, and that's all. not a lot to go off of but the unfortunate truth about that is that you could fix that problem by adding a lot MORE traits (and making them more specific+interesting) and there's a couple possible angles there: - traits with real-world significance, like "transgender" in Rimworld, or CKIII having real countries - traits that noticably gameplay. the most fun trait in Cult of the Lamb is "cowardly" (or something like that) because it causes them to run away from you and act scared when you interact with them, so you really notice it in play

I really liked Silksong. Much more than I expected to, and I liked Hollow Knight quite a bit.

Well, in 2024 there were 23 fatalities for people inside of motor vehicles, and (as far as I can find) exactly 1 fatality for someone on a train. Given that ~78% of trips are in cars and 4.4% in transit, scaling transit deaths by a factor of 17 to match still makes it the safer choice.

a common ash tree, with its highly fractal branching structure The Columbia River watershed, branching into many tributaries such as the Willamette, Deschutes, & Snake Rivers. The whole watershed covers large regions of Oregon, Washington, BC, Montana, and Idaho.

Like when I use google maps, it converts that map into useful instructions. But if I want to parcel out a bunch of land into agreed-upon "owners", and to particularly find which which land is "ownerless" so I can claim it myself, a map becomes essential
In the Renaissance, with the renewed interest in classical works, maps became more like surveys once again, while European exploration of the Americas and their subsequent effort to control and divide those lands revived interest in scientific mapping methods. Peter Whitfield, the author of several books on the history of maps, credits European mapmaking as a factor in the global spread of western power: "Men in Seville, Amsterdam or London had access to knowledge of America, Brazil, or India, while the native peoples knew only their own immediate environment" (Whitfield). Jordan Branch and his advisor, Steven Weber, propose that the power of large kingdoms and nation states of later history are an inadvertent byproduct of 15th-century advances in map-making technologies.

playing with tooltips. it's important to that my games don't look like websites, so I want to figure out some way of decorating this, but haven't settled on a style yet.
four versions of the same tooltip, one with a thick ornate border, one very compact one with a minimal underline, one that looks like a scroll unrolling with a wiggly border above and below, and another where the scroll unwinds behind the tooltip instead of in front of it.
