2025 figures do seem to indicate lower success rates but are vulnerable to fluctuations in decision and reporting dates relating to the exact date of the reporting (Sept 25 or earlier). Of course, main takeaway, they are still low and discouraging.

It’s misleading to report the 2025 figures as the headlines. This year is not finished, either for applications or awards. The 2024 figures are complete (11% ESRC new investigator, 7% ESRC standard according to the table).

I’d also be skeptical for other reasons. Any stat like this tends to equate experience of nature with visiting a park or countryside, and it’s much more varied.

Interesting article, but the research paper which is linked to regarding doesn’t say anything about daily time spent in nature. Excellent research, but no relationship to this stat.

So depressing given how quick and easy to improve compared to other transport infrastructure.
