Mooching round Jervaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire in January. Not the profusion of wildflowers of summer, but still the plants intentional/ creeping /nested give charm and softness. One of my special places.

Citizen Science and Citizen Art? Fascinating ‘Landscape Sheff’ research engaging Sheffielders with pollinators and meadow species in workshops over the summer with scientist planting designer Elisa Olivares & artist /landscape tutor Catherine Higham. Exhibition in the Winter Gardens until Sat 30th.

The Context The latest State of Nature report highlighted that the UK is now one of the most. nature-depleted countries on Earth. Its biodiversity is declining due to loss of habitat. Pollinators and flowering plants seem to be among the most affected. Their distribution (i.e. where we can find them) has shrunk by 20%. The Project Urban habitats like our parks can provide support to these struggling organisms, and research shows that we benefit from their presence too! Through Meadows Magnified, 16 small meadows were installed in several of Sheffields parks and green spaces. The idea was to attract both people and pollinators, inviting the public and resident volunteers to follow the seasonal cycle of the plants and the insects, through a series of workshops in the parks. Meadows Magnified Research Team: Elisa Olivares Elisa Olivares is a lecturer in Planting Design in the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield. Interested in designing climate-resilient plant communities for urban areas, her research has focused on testing under-used plant species that offer drought tolerance and low maintenance. She has worked in Mexico and the UK Simone Farris Simone Farris is a Research Associate in the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield. His research has highlighted that urban biodiversity can improve well-being. The Response Over fifty people came to learn how to spot pollinators and enjoyed making artwork in response to the new meadows. Art prompted dialogue between researchers and participants who shared their experiences about the park and their reactions to the activities. This week-long exhibition in the Sheffield Winter Garden, from Tuesday 26th until Saturday 30th November 2024, presents a collection of the artwork created during the community workshops.
