I have had unsettling dreams set in the fungal cities of The Dawnhounds by @understatesmen.bsky.social. the work is so grounded in its sense of place that the events of book 2 feel like a threat aimed directly to the reader.

Setting broadly determines themes. A book set on a spaceship might play with ideas of personal space, in a forest on themes of bounty/scarcity

Setting directly defines resources characters have (Magic? Lasers? Cell phones?) As well as threats (cops? The inquisition? RED LASERS?!)

#SFFChat Setting influences tone dramatically. The same conversation with a grim backdrop vs a sunny one has an immediate change in the sense of stakes in the moment.

I met an absolutely lovely academic who asked whether my department back home is affected by ICE -- a question dramatizing how little info is getting out.

For the record, the small example I chose:
