"Forced sterilization laws are a really powerful example of how violations of disabled people’s bodies and rights are baked into our legal system today.”

For @motherjones.com, I reported on how disabled people continue to be forcibly sterilized. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Forced sterilization of disabled people isn't a relic of the past
In most states, eugenics-era laws still let doctors sterilize disabled patients—even against their will.

Many cities in CA have made it illegal to camp on public property. In this San Diego Union-Tribune OpEd, @cjvalasek.bsky.social & Sam Streuli write about the effects of criminalizing homelessness, especially on those with disabilities. Read now⤵️

I was diagnosed with congenital spinal stenosis a couple months ago. My ortho doc told me that I should try physical therapy again, but my physical therapist said there’s nothing she can do for me. My other options are an epidural (low effectiveness) or surgery (risky) (1/2)

As we celebrate MLK on his 95th birthday, we confront a bitter irony: The conservatives co-opting King’s racial justice activism while demonizing CRT as a “Marxist doctrine” are reproducing the rhetoric of white segregationists.

A couple of co-authors and I are submitting an op-ed today about the problem with the FDA approving a clinical test for assessing patient genetic risks of opioid use disorder. We argue that the tests are not based on sufficient research and will likely perpetuate racial disparities in pain treatment

I don't like to promote products on social media, but I started using Milanote, and so far, I find it to be more useful than Notion or Obsidian for most project management/tracking needs. It's made for creatives, but I think some neurodivergent folx (like myself) might find it helpful as well.

Heads up! Comments for this close today. If you have a few minutes to weigh in, please do.
Reminder that the US Census Bureau is talking about changing how it counts disability, a move which would create an at least 40% reduction in the number of people counted as disabled, and thus radically alter who can get benefits. You have until tomorrow (December 19, 2023) to weigh in on it:

Social media seems to be full of hate for non-binary folks these days. I am seeing many profiles, including those of gay men, repeat the same essentializing discourse about being non-binary as I used to hear them say about bisexual people. What I'm saying is that we need more voices in support.

I'm sure you all know the US health system sucks, but I've spent almost $2500 on physical therapy and doctor visits over the last 5 months and my hip injury still isn't better.
