As @carlkinsella.bsky.social aptly pointed out, so much of what we engage in shouldn’t really be *called* social media when it’s just algorithms designed to keep me looking at all costs. I would argue ye olde chat rooms and BBSes were more social media than modern Facebook is.

What's ironic to me about Silver's turn is that he literally wrote a book about how to be a better thinker and analyzer of data called The Signal and the Noise, and one of its essential points is that people who are experts in one thing assume they're experts in OTHER things. And well.......

This is where having a unicameral Westminster government with proportional representation would be so much better.

In that system, 1) a political party has only one leader (instead of 3 or more present now) and 2) the PR allows for stronger parties that enforce the line

Even among Democrats, California has only 1/3 the power they should based on how they vote.

Meanwhile New Hampshire, Maine, and Nevada have massive amounts of power (the same as California) despite a small fraction of the population

Obviously this isn’t a 5d chess moment. It’s really dumb to piss of your supporters for no reason.

But it would be nice if it’s a lose-lose situation for the cavers, where the both face massive political backlash while ultimately being unsuccessful
