Sometimes I think about Palantir Technologies and Anduril Industries and Tolkien's strong views on the threat of the Machine, and I get so mad I could spit. I get that the names #Tolkien created aren't explicitly copyrightable, but I hate these companies giving them their own social meaning.

That's not to say there wasn't racial hierarchy, of course. But Tolkien already wrote the Númenóreans as a Mediterranean-style society most akin to Byzantium (remember, Constantinople was modern-day Istanbul) or Egypt (North Africa) and he compared later Gondor to those same cultures.

If Gondor was anything like the Mediterranean world—and both the text and Tolkien are pretty clear about this—then it was a multiethnic society, full stop. If there were dark-skinned soldiers in Roman Britain, there were sure as hell dark-skinned Guards of the Citadel.

Why does #Tolkien call the granary in the Shire “the Grange,” but the ones in the Pelennor “garners?” Personally I attribute this to different languages of the “source texts”—i.e. the information from Gondor would have more loanwords—but perhaps there is another difference? #luinellë

It all happened so fast! What happened in the USA reminds me of what Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin found when they returned to The Shire (#LOTR). The hobbits were browbeaten and following orders because they had only ever known peace. But with the right leadership they overcame their dictator. #Tolkien
