Multilingual projects can be interesting. Turns out it's emerald in English, but smaragd in Dutch, German and all the Scandinavian languages. Probably the influence of Old French 'esmeraude', which was derived from Medieval Latin 'esmaraldus', which in turn was derived from...Latin smaragdus.
