MD, PhD. Postdoc studying cerebral circulation, neurovascular coupling. Dad of three amazing kids.
🇦🇺🦘Just wrapped up 6 incredible weeks of science, collaboration at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Thanks to Vicki Hinkley for such a productive partnership—I’m excited to continue this collaboration across 🇩🇰 and 🇦🇺. I’m also grateful to the USC CONNECT Programme for the funding 🙏

Also fascinating: cerebral arteries show a stronger myogenic response at lower pressures than extracranial vessels—likely a protective mechanism to prevent a pressure surge to the brain when drinking (🤯 avoided!).

🦒🫀Measuring hemodynamics in awake giraffes sounds like a wild challenge 🤯.
New paper by Christian Aalkjaer et al in @actaphysiologica.bsky.social 🔓: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
🦒 While drinking🚰:
⬇️ Heart rate
➡️ Arterial blood pressure
➡️ Carotid blood flow
⬆️ CSF pressure 🧠

🚨 Publication alert!🚨 Our new study (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....) in Acta Physiologica shows that #stroke/#hypoxia induces the expression of BK-Ca channels in the #cerebrovascular #endothelium across species 🧔🏻‍♂️🐭🐷🐀. These channels, absent in normoxia, regulate post-stroke arterial tone.

💉 Should calcium be used to treat #hyperkalemia?
Our new systematic review in #Resuscitation (🔓 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...) found no evidence supporting calcium for hyperkalemia management.

For the first time, we identified a link between homozygous variants in the voltage-gated sodium channel (#NaV1.1) gene #SCN1A and increased #migraine risk. 🤯 Unexpectedly, these homozygous carriers were protected against #epilepsy.

Variants causing loss-of-function of the Na,K-ATPase (#ATP1A2 gene) and gain-of-function of #CaV2.1 (#CACNA1A gene) increase the risk of migraine.
⚡️These changes may lead to a more depolarized cell membrane potential 🧠!

💡 Whole-exome sequence data from 454,706 individuals were examined.

💡 Carriers were compared with non-carriers in a burden analysis.

💡 A machine learning-based approach (#LoGoFunc) was used to predict whether variants resulted in gain-of-function, loss-of-function or neutral effect

🧠 Our new study in Cephalalgia (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...) explores genetic variants in FHM1-3 genes using @ukbiobank.bsky.social data.
A genotype-first approach revealed that these 🧬variants ⬆️ #migraine risk—and surprisingly, a link to ⬇️ #epilepsy was discovered.

Here’s what we found🧵

🚨 Breaking #Physiology news: Spinal arteries dilate in response to #noradrenaline!
Our new study (www.thespinejournalonline.com/article/S152... ) shows increased spinal cord blood flow in-vivo via β-adrenergic receptor–mediated vasodilation, as spinal arteries lack α1-adrenergic receptors.

Whisker stimulation led to exaggerated #neurovascular coupling (NVC) responses in the migraine mouse model. By normalizing resting perfusion with the pNaKtide treatment for 14 days, #NVC was no longer different compared with wild type mice.

#FHM migraines, caused by Na,K-ATPase α2 mutations, show ⬆️ Src kinase activation in SMCs, leading to hypercontractility. Our new study shows that 14 days of treatment with pNaKtide, targeting Na,K-ATPase-dependent Src activation, normalizes cerebrovascular tone in awake α2+/G301R migraine mice.

I am very excited to share our new paper in #JCBFM (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...)! We show that targeting Na,K-ATPase-dependent #Src kinase activation can prevent cerebral hypoperfusion and ⬆️ (video) #neurovascular coupling in a 🐭model of familial hemiplegic #migraine.

Here is a summary 🧵
