15 years ago I wrote the first sentence of a novel: "Once upon a time, in a small cottage on the side of a volcano, there lived a tortoise." For the last 5 years the book's been my main project, a form I've never quite seen. Now I'm serialising it, one short episode a week. Here we go... #booksky

Absolutely sobering reading.

+1.5ºC is gone, likely +2ºC as well.

"By 2040 on the current trajectory of +2ºC, 197 countries in the world would experience more than 150 days of 35ºC temperatures. In addition more than 3 billion people would experience severe water scarcity."
Conference Report: The Global Heating Emergency
Ten years ago the world agreed to limit temperatures to 2ºC by 2100, so it’s a little alarming to attend a conference discussing if its even possible to prevent breaching that limit by 2040.

The shrew’s extinction increases the tally of Australian mammals extinct since 1788 to 39 species. This is far more than for any other country. These losses represent about 10% of all Australia’s land mammal species before colonisation 🧪

🧵 I’ve been thinking about death, recently. Not my own, I look forward to the relaxation. It’s how people describe death. It’s a truism that the Irish do death ‘well’. We have an ancient tradition of engaging with mortality & a far too frequent experience of violent death in our history [1]
