Members of the Melbourne West Papuan community at the PNG Independence Day market last weekend--so good to see the community included in the regional dance performance.

Sad to hear William Robinson's gone. His Springbrook paintings in particular made a deep impression on me, creation myths of vertigo and light. They don't translate very well online, not least because of their scale, but here's a few. #australianart www.seattleartistleague.com/2022/04/19/w...

Of 130,000 people across 125 countries, 89% thought their national government “should do more to fight global warming”, and 69% would “contribute 1% of their household income every month to fight global warming”.

Great to catch up with good friend (and wine & whisky expert) Odj, and to finally see his labour of love, Flight Bar, complete with my old velvet couch. Check it out if you’re ever in Maleny QLD on a Friday or Saturday night—he has great taste in vinyl too! #maleny maps.app.goo.gl/qKiY24QpF4Vm...

The struggle for independence continues. The dignity and self-belief of the West Papuan people in the face of ongoing #genocide as well as the shocking silence of much of the world never ceases to move me and I stand in solidarity with West Papuans. Free West Papua!

100s of thousands of Papuans have been killed over the last 60 years, there are 10s of thousands of internal refugees. West Papua needs to be added to the UN decolonisation list, as 1.8M Papuans asked in a 2017 petition rejected by the UN. Indonesia must also grant access to human rights monitors.

The Dutch invested in development & education and encouraged West Papuan nationalism in the hope of preventing Indonesia taking control. A national parliament, the New Guinea Council, was elected in April 1961. Jouwe was the vice-president, and the highest-ranking Papuan; the president was Dutch.

Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch after WWII, which the Netherlands formally recognised in 1949. However, the Dutch retained sovereignty over Netherlands New Guinea, arguing (correctly though somewhat self-servingly) that it was geographically & ethnically distinct (i.e. Melanesian).

63 years ago today, on 1st Dec 1961, West Papua raised the Morning Star flag for the first time. The national flag was designed by independence activist and leader Nicolaas Jouwe, with the 7 blue lines representing the 7 traditional areas of West Papua. 🧵 #westpapua #indonesia #papuamerdeka

Almost finished putting together the website for a 2025 project I seem to be launching soon. Commissioned this illustration from Ukrainian illustrator Yana Smolinska--very happy with how it turned out.

Missing home at the moment. I was born in Madang, PNG, and have lived in Brisbane, Melbourne, USA, China, & Japan, but my true home will always be the village of Mengino, Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. Poem from Rabbit 26: Belonging. #papuanewguinea #niugini #goroka #poetry
