Maybe the concept of query qualification where the mid-Sept change also altered the range of queries the site can show for. I saw a shift once and inspected the range of queries before and after and they were quite different.

Yes. On the product grid I see the image and caption as "most Newsworthy" and I'm also seeing how adding salient helpful details as thumb descriptions as "important details" helps ranking.
