Southern Okinawa was the end for the two generals who led the battle. Simon Buckner, killed by shrapnel at a forward observation post, and his counterpart, Mitsuri UshiJimi, who committed seppuku. Buckner died at a nondescript road junction; Ushijima in a sea facing cave. 144 steps to up get there
