music dork, movie nerd, tv junkie, gaming goofus...opinions mine, unfortunately. For work I spend lots of time surveying public opinion on all kinds of stuff. Also: St. Louis Cardinals, Blues, Mizzou, and Tottenham Hotspur. #COYS

And this one. It's very good. And then the song "Baby You're Just You" comes at the end and it goes trascendent. I swear to goodness, the solo at the end of that song is the most searing encapsulation of 20something angst and frustration ever recorded.

My most-played record from that year and still a monster. Mark Lanegan as a deeper-voice grunge version of Burton Cummings (the Guess Who), and it completely and absolutely works:

Ack, that last one should've had "Album cover for Wedding Present's "Bizarro" album"

Here's another great record from that year, more UK indie pop at the tail end of C-86...

Have already seen a bunch of my faves here -- De La, Pixies, J&MC, Galaxie 500 -- but a few others that hit me hard that year. (It me, college radio music director, 1989):

And also the fantastic 1989 "answer" album to PB, with one of the greatest diss tracks of all time -- aimed at the Beasties for "selling out" of the East Coast scene for LA: "Sons of 3rd Bass". Bonus points for the guest appearances of Zev Love X -- a/k/a a young MF Doom:

Was heading out for the evening constitutional and passed by the local bottle shop across the street and...what's that I spy in the window? Yes. Yesssss.

First case of 2025 enboughtened. The most magical time of the year is upon us!

About the only local pop-culture facing thing about Eliot being a St. Louisan by birth is his star on the U-City Loop / St. Louis Walk of Fame

Tottenham Hotspur truly are Michael Scott FC, and I mean that in the most loving and amazing way possible.

Xavi Simons. My goodness. Now I just need to keep practicing saying his last name properly.

RIP to Ron Turcotte -- the man privileged to have ridden the real-life incarnation of Pegasus.

What perfect album came out when you were sixteen?

If you're developing a game, please take some free, unsolicited advice: fonts and typography *matter*.

Look at the mess above (nothing captures the tone and feel of the dark medieval period quite like Helvetica) vs how even a comparatively small amount of effort pays off below.

One of the weirdest, most unfathomable decisions I've ever seen a pro sports athlete make was this one -- refusing even as the club was headed to a UCL final -- to consider extending his contract.

What actor’s expression in a movie will stay with you the rest of your life?

(Take all the horror and possession elements out of The Exorcist; I would watch a movie with Patrick Miller as Father Karras questioning his faith, dealing with family, struggling to live his life.)

If there's a heaven, I'd like to think that right now Kim Shattuck is up there sneering through a version of "Lucky Guy" for George Wendt right now.
