Interesting tidbit in the federal budget: $1 million/year for Canadian Geographic. It's a perfectly fine publication (although not what it once was), but it already receives support through the Canada Periodical Fund. Why extra money for CanGeo and not, say, the Canadian Medical Association Journal?

Why do we still use the first-past-the-post electoral system, given everything that's wrong with it? Because of elections like this. Seven names on the ballot and a write-in option. HIghest voter turnout since 1969. A meaningful difference between the front runners. And in the end, a clear outcome.

We're now about one Fox News story away from Trump goons Bessent, Lutnick, and Vought sidling up to any nation considering doing a trade deal with Canada and telling them that doing so would not be in their best interests, capisce?

Here are some heroic images of Donald Trump. Which ones were made by his acolytes, admirers, and the US government, and which are parodies made in mockery? It hardly matters anymore, does it?

I have watched the first 15 minutes of Apple TV's The Last Frontier and can report that wow, that thing's stupid.

Am at a splendid fun Halloween performance of Rocky Horror at Ottawa’s Gladstone Theatre. Have started a rumour that Mark Carney is in the audience but unrecognizable as he’s dressed like Riff Raff.

Just thought I'd mention that I wrote this for @hilltimes.com, which published it in its print edition on January 20, 2025, the day Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term as US president.

US president Trump punishes Americans with new 10% tariff on goods bought from Canada because Americans saw a Canadian TV ad in which a former US president disavowed tariffs as an economic instrument.

It is possible Donald Trump was not getting from Canada-U.S. trade negotiations what he wants to get from these negotiations.

The pleasure juice of pure power comes from doing violent things that affect the lives of so many others without having to ask permission. No matter what the courts say, or regulatory agencies, or international law, or what your opponents can't tolerate. That's where the fascism kicks in.

The American companies John Deere, CASE, and Caterpillar all make construction industry backhoes. The machines demolishing the East Wing of the White House are manufactured by Volvo.

Asking no one's permission, Trump demolishes part of the White House, igniting outrage. Canadians, squirming uncomfortably in their seats, try not to think about what needs to be done to 24 Sussex.

If Trump's doling out $40 billion to shore up an extreme right wing state that can't balance its books, maybe Alberta could get a piece of that action?

Trump and his buddies sit around Mar-a-Lago telling one another stuff that sounds (to them) scandalous, because it makes them think they’re smarter than everyone else, and as ignorant bigots they can’t be bothered to look anything up. Of course optic fibre can be connected to copper wire.
