Urban studies lover. Author of From Steel to Slots (2016). Now at Northwestern U. Foundation Relations.
I very directly credit the direction I took into grad school, the book I wrote, and paths beyond to the class I took on “Sociology of Disasters” that Kai Erikson taught my senior year as a one-semester visiting professor. I know he made profound impacts on so many others as well!
The great sociologist Kai Erikson has died at 94. Kai is known for his pioneering research on the impact of disasters on communities. His book, *Everything in its Path,* remains a landmark contribution to social science and a model to all of us who work to understand the human costs of crises. RIP

Working with editorial advisors @zachmortice.bsky.social, @anjulierao.bsky.social , and @katewagner.wehwalt.net and with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Chicago Review of Architecture (ChiRA) will seek to generate erudite, humorous, and hyperlocal writing on the built (and unbuilt) environment.

Spent at least 10 years waiting for the National Public Housing Museum to open in Chicago’s former Jane Addams Homes, and it was worth it! Exhibits and recreated apartments humanize policy history, encourage interaction with artifacts like this 1939 Superman comic touting new housing projects.

Public history/preservation folks: Historic New England (i.e., where I work!) offers PAID internships in a wide range of program areas--application deadline is Feb. 19 for summer and fall. Undergrads, grad students, new professionals welcome, but must be New England residents during the internship.

Interesting twist on NIMBYism in Fairfax County: Casino opponents say it would compromise residents with security clearances
(To be clear, I am not a casino YIMBY)
Ex-spies say suburban D.C. casino would put nation’s secrets at risk
Valerie Plame and more than 100 other former CIA, defense and intelligence figures say a Tysons casino would be a too-convenient temptation.

I have attempted a Starter Pack for historians of architecture and the like!

All caveats apply: blurriness of fields’ boundaries, clumsy search function, etc. But I did my best! If I inadvertently omitted you or you’d like to be added (or removed, for that matter), lemme know!
