We started watching Scream 2 with the Swedish Tween and had to abandon it because the Tween could not tell the difference between the two women with "the brown bob."

SNAP Food Assistance Is a Sound Investment in Our Nation’s Health, Well-Being, and Economy Food is an essential human need. The United States has the resources to ensure everyone has enough to eat and no one goes hungry. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is our nation’s most effective tool to reduce hunger and food insecurity among our most vulnerable neighbors, including children, older adults, people working low-paying jobs, people with disabilities and serious health conditions, and veterans. Beyond helping millions of people afford the food they need, SNAP plays a critical role in reducing poverty, improving health and economic outcomes, and supporting the economy during downturns. For children in particular, SNAP delivers benefits that last a lifetime. One study estimates that every SNAP dollar invested in children returns $62 in value over the long-term. Despite these clear benefits, Republican lawmakers, in order to partially pay for tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the wealthy, are considering proposals that would cut SNAP by $230 billion through 2034, taking away help many low-income households need to afford food. This would increase their grocery costs and the risk of experiencing food insecurity. SNAP plays a critical role in supporting families and local communities during economic downturns. In a weak economy, every $1 in additional spending on SNAP benefits generates $1.54 in economic activity as households use their benefits to shop at over 250,000 local grocery stores and supermarkets, spurring new spending throughout local economies across the country. SNAP frees up money that can be used for health-promoting activities and is linked with better access to preventive health care and reduced health care costs. Food assistance acts as an income boost, allowing people to spend money that would otherwise have been used for food on health-related activities. Infants and children in families receiving food assistance from SNAP are more likely to see a doctor for periodic check-ups. Older adults participating in SNAP are more likely to take the full dosage of prescription medications because they have enough income to afford food and medicine, compared to low-income older adults not participating in SNAP, who may have to make difficult choices about stretching their medication to afford enough food. SNAP may also help low-income older adults live independently in their communities and avoid hospitalization. Low-income adults participating in SNAP incur $1,400 — nearly 25 percent — less in medical care costs than low-income non-participants.

Klein: Then let me flip that question a bit. Why are we losing? Coates: We’re losing because there are always moments when we lose. Klein: See, that feels very fatalistic to me. Coates: It doesn’t feel fatalistic to me. It feels like the truth. Let me express what I mean. I’m Ta-Nehisi Coates, I’m the writer, I’m the individual, right? But I am part of something larger, and I’ve always felt myself as part of something larger. I have a tradition, I have ancestry, I have heritage. What that means is that I do whatever I do within the time that I have in my life, whatever time I’m gifted with, and much of what I do is built on what other people did before them. Then, after that, I leave the struggle where I leave it, and hopefully, it’s in a better place. Oftentimes it’s not. That’s the history in fact. And then my progeny, they pick it up, and they keep it going. I am descended from people who, in their lifetime, fought with all their might for the destruction of chattel slavery in this country. And they never saw it. They never saw it. In my personal belief system, they died in defeat, in darkness. So I guess the privilege that I draw out of this, the honor that I draw out of this, is not that things will necessarily be better in my lifetime, but that I will make the contribution that I am supposed to make. Coates, continued: The fact of the matter is, as horrifying as the killing of Charlie Kirk was, and as horrifying as the feeling is in this moment, that we are in an era of political violence — and I don’t want to sound flip here. Political violence is the norm for the Black experience in this country. It just is. I don’t even mean like the Malcolm X, Martin Luther King variety of it — which is the norm, too. You would be hard-pressed to have a conversation with a Black person in this country who is a descendant of slavery and not have them be able to tell you themselves: Look, my uncle, my grandfather, my great-grandfather, they lived in a small town in Mississippi, in Tennessee, in Alabama, and they got into some sort of dispute with a white man. Either they were lynched or we had to run. Political violence runs through us. It is our heritage. Is that good? No. Do we valorize it? Absolutely not. Do we minimize it? Absolutely not. But a life free of it is not a thing that’s really in reach in my time.

From Vanity Fair: It is not just, for instance, that Kirk held disagreeable views—that he was pro-life, that he believed in public executions, or that he rejected the separation of church and state. It’s that Kirk reveled in open bigotry. Indeed, claims of Kirk’s “civility” are tough to square with his penchant for demeaning members of the LGBTQ+ community as “freaks” and referring to trans people with the slur “tranny.” Faced with the prospect of a Kamala Harris presidency, Kirk told his audience that the threat had to be averted because Harris wanted to “kidnap your child via the trans agenda.” Garden-variety transphobia is sadly unremarkable. But Kirk was a master of folding seemingly discordant bigotries into each other, as when he defined “the American way of life” as marriage, home ownership, and child-rearing free of “the lesbian, gay, transgender garbage in their school,” adding that he did not want kids to “have to hear the Muslim call to prayer five times a day.” The American way of life was “Christendom,” Kirk claimed, and Islam—“the sword the left is using to slit the throat of America”—was antithetical to that. Large “dedicated” Islamic areas were “a threat to America,” Kirk asserted, and New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was a “Mohammedan,” with Kirk supposing that anyone trying to see “Mohammedism take over the West” would love to have New York—a “prior Anglo center”—“under Mohammedan rule.”
