Well, curiosity drove me to dig in to some family research. Turns out my 4th and 5th great grandfathers were members of the Massachusetts Militia, Minot’s company and were part of the fight at Lexington and Concord. #HATM

Re: smallpox innoculation. That is knowledge that came from a African man, Onesimus, who was enslaved to Cotton Mather. They would use cowpox for the source virus. it would be used to fight an epidemic in Boston in 1729. #HATM

Knox will retire to land his wife inherited in Maine in Thomaston. His house, Montpelier, is now a museum. Maine’s first granite fort will be built nearby at the mouth of the Penobscot River which is named after him. Also Maine’s most recent county was created in 1860 will bear his name. #HATM

The Kennebec River is a big river that can accommodate modern destroyers. Bath Iron Works is at its head. Those rapids are Class 4 level. #HATM

Ooh the Mowatt campaign! Mowatt bombarded Falmouth because some patriots had captured him earlier in Maine. Incl. Peleg Wadsworth, the poets grandfather. Mowatt was humiliated. #HATM

So today I was working on my candidate wall for my classroom and I found it difficult to find all the people running for governor. Well, the Dems and Indies at any rate. The Repubs had a handy list with links on their website. This race is just as important for Maine as the federal ones.

I love when I learn something new and it completely upends my lesson plans, it a good way! Today it was the story of Pvt. John Poor of IL, stationed at Ft William, Cape Eliz, ME who might be the first Am. soldier to have died in WW1, days before we dec lwar.
