What problems were you having? I just tried it out after an update, set a custom projection with the proj4 string "+proj=isea", and got something that at least appears similar. Admittedly I didn't anything beyond look at the neat mapview, though:

Fun fact, you can hillshade a normal photo (against one band, eg red only), and it looks pretty neat:
