In a way, it really kind of kills much variety in culture in favor of only offering the general public different flavors of the exact same things, to the point that it's boring, trite, and predictable.

How we get past that in general, I have no idea.

It's the same thing we see in tv, film, big game producing companies, etc. They're all in it to make money, sure, but it's a problem when all the funding, production, & mass marketing come from being picked up by companies that inevitably choose to not take a risk & keep making the same things.

There doesn't seem to be a "right" answer to getting a publishing contract, but any time anyone seems to bring up any of the concerns, the implication is that you're the one at fault for not doing it right.
