Another one, when I don't know what notes to put where to start a melody I will literally just click wildly on the piano roll and listen to different bits, removing and adding notes until I hear a cool rhythm then isolate that and build around it, throw everything at the wall until something works:)

To make some really cool ambience I like to take the main basses and stabby sounds (chord stabs or one shots generally), duplicate them and then distort, reverb, eq, and add other random effects to them. Make the reverb long and eq the sounds differently, bandpass them to different frequencies 1/
