We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job

Just to be absolutely clear, if you work with someone who is known to be harmful to a particular group of people, relentlessly, that group of people are gonna notice! You’re signalling that you are not safe to work with. I wish allies would notice this stuff more too.

In 2004, I interviewed for a teaching position. The principal asked me how many kids I had. I answered. He asked if I was planning to have more —said he couldn’t afford to have another teacher out on maternity leave.
