🤔 How do journal editors decide whether to send a manuscript for peer review? 🆓

@charlie-wray.bsky.social & I discuss how to get your foot in the journal's door, metaphorically speaking.

The longer I practice medicine and parent, the more and more I see how skills in one translate to the other: modeling good behavior, allowing for failure, showing that you care

My advice, as a journal editor @jhospmedicine.bsky.social, has been to either (1) find a native English speaker with scientific writing experience to join your team, or (2) use ChatGPT or other AI interface to refine your writing.
Non-native English speakers need 50% more time to write a paper

When they do, they face a 2.5 times higher chance of being rejected because of language

Honest question: has anyone made a starter packet of pragmatic conservative voices on this platform? I’d love to hear common sense conservative takes on what’s ailing our world.

So true! My caveat is don’t just think of polypharmacy in older adults…any new med, adjustment, or common culprit can tip the balance toward AMS. Surprised how often we miss this in hospital medicine
the number of times polypharmacy goes unrecognized as a cause of “altered mental status” is astounding

Medicine focuses a lot on the question “will this help my patient” but not on the question “when will it help my patient.” The latter becomes important as we age. We’ve developed a “time-to-benefit” tool on eprognosis.ucsf.edu to help answer this question. Here is a snapshot

Hey everyone! Jumping over here to join the #medsky (ne’ #medtwitter) community and see what all the hubbub is about.

If you don’t know me…I post about medicine, academia, writing, riding, and being a father.

Looking forward to reconnecting with folks!

Economics (ie. the study of tradeoffs and how people manage them) is a more valuable skill set than organic chemistry and many other biological sciences when applied to being a doctor.

End of story.

Academic Tip # 17:

Once a week, take a moment to tell someone that you appreciate them and how they help you in your life and work.

Then...take a few more minutes and share that comment with their supervisor.

Imagine the impact this will have on your community in 1 year.

In academics...

We don't do a good enough job of telling people when they do things right.

Positive reinforcement on the smallest things (e.g. quick response to email, clear explanation to complex topic, etc) can have + long term impacts on relationships and quality of work

I have two boys.

They have a ton of hot wheel and can remember EXACTLY which car is there’s and which car is the others’.

To this day, I still have to look up the different RTAs.

Oh to be young…

Academic Tip #4:

Be nice to all the wonderful administrative assistants who coordinate and set up your meetings and who make the world go round.

Even if you've never met them before and just interact via email - tell them how much you appreciate their time and energies.

Today I received 2 emails...

One told me of a fundable score on a big grant...

The other was a message from my son's teacher telling me how empathetic and kind of a person he is.

Guess which one I'm more proud of?

I think we wholly underestimate how much work can get done in a 30 min meeting (compared to a 1 hr meeting)

Academic Tip #543:

When you present your work, there are generally two types of people who will give you feedback.

Those who will give you praise, and those who will question it.

The former feel good. But, you’ll get the most long-term value by listening to the later.

Academic Writing Tip #3:

Get rid of adverbs. All of them. They slow your reader down and muddle your story. You think they help, but they don't.
