Getting back to where I left off…

Academic tip# 256:

Tip #5: Embrace the hard or boring stuff

Some of the most successful people I know in academics are those who stood up when no one else would and took on the un-sexy project or the seemingly impossible responsibility...

Tip #4: The most understudied, but more important things you can learn is to be a better writer.

Yeah, you didn't go to school to be a writer, but it's how we trade ideas and have conversations in academics. Failing to do this well puts you at a disadvantage...

Tip #3: The small things end up mattering in the long run.

As someone who interviews applicants, reviews papers, and makes judgements on people and decisions, I've found that that when people get the small things right, I can usually count on them to get the big things done...

Tip #2: It's OK to ask questions.

I think most people think asking for help is a sign of weakness or an inability to understand. After I became comfortable saying "I don't get it", my life got much easier (and no one seemed to care)...

Tip #1: Intelligence isn't the only driver of success.

Early on in my career, I thought it was the smartest people who got ahead. Over time, I've learned that's not always the case...

I have two boys.

They have a ton of hot wheel and can remember EXACTLY which car is there’s and which car is the others’.

To this day, I still have to look up the different RTAs.

Oh to be young…

Academic Tip #4:

Be nice to all the wonderful administrative assistants who coordinate and set up your meetings and who make the world go round.

Even if you've never met them before and just interact via email - tell them how much you appreciate their time and energies.

If you missed it, @JHospMedicine editors @SuchitaSata & @zahirkanjee just gave an amazing Updates in Hospital Med talk at #SHMConverge24.

I came for the corny jokes, but stayed for the knowledge

This is where we are. Relying on abortion laws that were passed before the civil war ended. 🤦‍♂️
December 7, 2024 at 11:22 AM
I think we wholly underestimate how much work can get done in a 30 min meeting (compared to a 1 hr meeting)
December 7, 2024 at 11:28 AM
Honestly, what can the woman not do…?🤷‍♂️

My wife and I are both fairly compensated physicians…

yet she insists on tearing our kids’ napkins in half to “save a little money”.

I love her.

Academic Tip #29:

Create a personal ‘board of directors’.

This is 3-5 mentors who can each advise you on specific areas of your career (clinical, research, education, work-life balance, etc).

Why? No one person can fully advise on a modern academic career.

Was thinking about what to put up on new office walls.

Thought I could honor the past (my degrees, awards, etc), but chose to look to the future (kiddos artwork).

December 7, 2024 at 11:43 AM
This world would be a better place if more people were willing to just say “I don’t know”

Reading this article on the importance of children reading you realize that:

1. the physical presence of books in your home is important
2. Dolly Parton is a saint
3. Pediatricians do it all (and are underappreciated in our...
