Why Chinese Can Make Complex Words Easier to Understand 👇

Okay, I might lose a few of you here 😅 — but one of the reasons Chinese can actually make complicated terms easier is because you can often break them down into simple, meaningful parts. #Mandarinsky #languagesky

I remember hearing you dream in languages you are fluent in...but then I had a whole dream in Russian and I was (and still am) very far from fluent.

Now I feel most of my dreams don't have any language, sometimes they do, but rarely.
Storytime!

Have you ever dreamed in a language you were learning? What was it like? How did you feel about it?

I need a "kill switch" for any news about the US.

It's getting more depressing by the second. Now an executive order to cut federal funding for NPR and PBS?

Popular movie about a single mom. I don't know anything about it, just got this recommendation. Apparently it's VERY good, so I am excited to watch:

I am not the typical student for an intensive Chinese Mandarin program.

I have been living in Shanghai for the past 11 years and speak what would be considered fluent and almost “native-like” Chinese to people just passing me on the street hearing me talk to a neighbor or a vendor.

These porcelains, found in the Song-period (AD 960–1279) Nanhai I shipwreck in the South China Sea, are inscribed with Chinese characters #ChineseLanguageDay
The characters were likely merchants' names, distinguishing the goods of different traders. 🏺

Imagine my horror when a friend texts me that our best friend who goes to FSU is not picking up her phone or answering texts.

Complete torment. After a lot of text messages, we found out she was okay but this should NOT be normal.

I hype ChatGPT so much for learning Mandarin--or really any AI assistance tool. I would have improved SO quickly back in the day if I had something that could give feedback and correct errors. I did it the hard way, which still worked, but AI-assisted tools work as an amazing supplemental tool.

Question for anyone who has tried to learn Mandarin on Duo or Rosetta Stone: did you learn the sounds with the characters or the pinyin first? I have both on because I’m still trying to learn sentence structure, but ultimately I’ll want to be able to read.

Quite impressed that despite me ghosting bsky for so many months, the Mandarin Chinese feed is still pretty intact. I can only imagine how destroyed the No Poltics China feed is though.

We are officially living in the dumbest timeline rn. And apparently Apple is smuggling in plane-fulls of iPhones to avoid tariffs and likely to just outsource phone making to India? Please remind me how this helps Americans again...

Definitely pass on grape tanghulu, a huge no for me. I also think tanghulu is quite sweet, but hawthorn is nice because it's sour, so it balances out the sweet taste. Strawberry is quite nice too, but will be sweeter.
I tried Tanghulu for the first time during my visit to Shanghai. Before I left for my trip, it was trending on TikTok; everyone was making it at home! But I wanted to wait until I got to China to try it for the first time.……. I didn’t like it 😭 It was way too sticky and the grapes weren’t sweet ❌

This is obviously not true, but also—I think people don't understand the demographics of a majority of active users on this app (REDNote), basically the younger, wealthier, and mostly female population:

𝐗𝐢𝐚𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐡𝐮 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 (𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒)

Gender:

80% women
20% men

Some TikTok refugees are coming back to TikTok and saying things about China that I am skeptical any Chinese person on xiaohongshu would say like that no one there works more than 40 hour work weeks

This is really the next important step in this revolution. Start getting Cdramas trending all over in the states; keep up with Chinese music artists, and watch Chinese movies.

Imagine getting a Cdrama to #1 on Netflix. 😂
My govt may be crumbling but #RedNote may just be the best thing to ever happen to Americans - they’re getting introduced to #cdramas! I love it 😂 Maybe now I will finally be able to find people irl who share my interests 😆
