Could the TTC reconceptualize certain routes, for instance Spadina, as something closer to an express route, warranting streetcar stop spacing of 500 m to 600 m, to be accompanied by a less frequent local bus (on the Spadina Ave portion only) making all the current stops (plus a few perhaps)?

Hmm, could those specific detectors be temporarily disabled or modified via a software patch, which could then be undone if the pilot wasn’t adopted?

Interesting, I was not aware of that! It’s a good thing there are some actual experts here and not just randos trying to speed up the streetcars 🤣

I wonder if this dynamic could be avoided here by some combo of a pilot, which would show the upside of fewer stops, especially when paired with TSP, and by implementing bus routes, even with limited schedules, parallel to streetcar lines being sped up, so that a stop removal per se is not needed /2

There is a pretty classic issue in trade policy this reminds me of, where gains of a proposed change are widely distributed and not yet realized by beneficiaries but costs are concentrated and well known to those who would be affected, who lobby vigorously against it. /1

I think a number of councillors mentioned they would like the TTC to look at stop removals on streetcar lines at the recent board meeting, so hoping sensible reforms might get considered as part of a wider push to modernize along with signal priority and other low cost high impact measures

Where is this abomination? Lol

The cost, archaic/infantalizing boarding practices, slow schedules, and routine delays are bad enough, but the prospect of being stuck on board for many many hours really wrecks the demand from even the most hardcore rail fans

Yes! Here are images of the St Clair streetcar with the current # of stops, and then with proposed stop reductions (which are still fairly close - see line 2 stations for reference), configured as you suggest, with tips 400 metres from stops but in a diamond shape to better model walk time in a grid

Agree, near side stops can make sense in some cases, ie with very short cycle times (meaning transit vehicle can trigger green within 10 seconds, as in France) or where intersection with another major transit route makes priority less sensible (may as well use red light stop for boarding)

😢 i hope the cyclist is okay

The TTC’s area maps use what appears to be a 400m radius for a 5m walk, and I have seen that referred to as a rule of thumb… but of course everyone is different and no disrespect intended to those who find that distance challenging or who might take longer humantransit.org/2011/04/basi...
December 10, 2025 at 3:35 AM
Yup. Stops on some streetcar lines are dense enough that riders travelling even just a few stops would save time on net with stop reductions even if they have to walk another 200m to get to their stop.
December 10, 2025 at 2:37 AM
Fully agree. Here’s the current set of stops on the Spadina line, surrounded by 400m radius circles to indicate a 5min walking distance, with the Yonge line from Bloor to King for reference. Stops are too dense to get a reasonable speed, be nice to pare them down as proposed in the second image.

Not just TSP ! — new motion brought late today at TTC Board to look at stop spacing, vehicle speeds, and parking and turning changes. Let’s go!

Next challenge: crank it up EVERYWHERE there's a red dot below. We already paid for the infrastructure; make it work!

Looks like a motion was just added to the agenda for tomorrow’s TTC Board meeting to direct an urgent review of Line 6’s performance - nice to see the Mayor and TTC board members being open to feedback from transit riders and advocates secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

@diannesaxe.bsky.social @ausmalik.bsky.social let’s use this technique to allow for transit signal priority to be implemented on Spadina
