I'm fully convinced Erza Klein is just an idiot. He has never understood fascism and never tried, or he would understand that doing politics "the right way" is actually how people like Charlie undermine the thing Ezra thinks they're affirming.

It seems like this really is the question posed for the future of socialist movements: how do we both move away from capitalism and against reactionary "anti-capitalism," so to speak?

"Learning from the past" must also include learning the lesson of anti- Semitism, of foreshortened "anti-capitalism." It would be a serious mistake if the Left today were to view capitalism only in terms of the abstract dimension of the capital antinomy, whether in terms of technocratic domination or in terms of abstract Reason. Similarly, more than a small degree of caution should be exercised towards phenomena such as "new" forms of psychotherapy which hypostatize the emotions in opposition to thought, or biologistic understandings of the social problem of ecology. Any "anti-capitalism" which seeks the immediate negation of the abstract and glorifies the concrete - instead of practically and theoretically considering what the historical overcoming of both could mean - can, at best, be socially and politically impotent in the face of capital. At worst it can be dangerous, even if the needs it expresses could be interpreted as emancipatory. The Left once made the mistake of thinking that it had the monopoly on anti-capitalism or, conversely, that all forms of anti-capitalism are, at least potentially, progressive. That mistake was fatal, not least of all for the Left. It feels like the era of “woke capitalism” has come to a close, or the idea has at least gone into hibernation. In our last interview, you called it “a substantive victory of the left and the forces of justice,” and we were compelled by your defense of it in a time when many on the left were dismissive. How do you look back on that phenomenon now? I feel fairly vindicated about that. Some on the left, including myself, hoped that the alternative to woke capitalism was socialism — or at the very least, a version of capitalism that represented meaningful, substantive improvements toward justice and democracy in the workplace. That hope is obviously worth having, but I don’t think it was very serious, three years ago, to look out at the constellation of forces and think that the alternative to woke capitalism was going to be a progressive worker state. The alternative was open-air apartheid. We could have just consulted what the world was like thirty years before that and thirty years before that, and we would have seen the alternative to “woke capitalism” that has always had the most institutional force behind it. And if we lost sight of that, we were deluding ourselves, and we should be honest about that.
