This is entirely a spitball, but I wonder if some people think "having good politics" = "being a good person."
Instead of "having good politics" is a part of "being a good person."
Basically, having good politics doesn't automatically make somebody a good person, but some people think it does.

I know I'm late, but for what it's worth, my family (who are pretty tuned-in as far as people go) are paying absolutely zero attention to this right now.

I like Eric. He's a good guy, and I remember talking to him on the Hitler site about DC politics. Honestly was one of the most-insightful conversations I had over there.
