So this is what you get when the US is improving, because it replaces the starting debuff spirit "American Malaise," which is much worse.
The American Malaise Daily Political Power Gain: -0.25 Recruitable Population Factor: -20% Stability: -25.00% War Upport: -15.00% -------------- America was once a nation of indomitable will; a nation so bountiful and spirited that its optimism seemed unconquerable. That was ended by the atomic bombing of Pearl Harbor. Now, across each and every one of these United States, the country is mired in a malaise with only a dim light at the end of the tunnel. The land of opportunity and idealism has been overcome by poverty and strife. It is a pit that may not be surmounted easily, and only time will tell if the patriotic fire that once burned in American hearts shall return. Or if it will be extinguished.

I remember talking to him about it during his AMA last year, and he told me, "Twitter is a smug and condescending platform."

I agree with him, because he's part of the problem.
But honestly, Twitter is a smug and condescending platform, and too many of our media discussions are happening there, in my opinion, considering that it’s not conducive to good faith discussion. Part of the reason I wanted to do this AMA is to take on questions of trust and transparency more directly, and I know that’s a value that the Times shares institutionally. Which, it turns out is basically an admission of guilt.

"New York Times Continues Welfare Job Program For Useless Assholes," The Onion (May 1945) New York, New York, United States of America During a press conference, New York Times publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger has announced the continuation of its long-running welfare work program. "As our nation recovers from the chaos of war, The New York Times is doing our part to help employ America's useless assholes," he said during Monday's press conference. "As I speak, over a dozen of honest, hard-working Americans who are useless assholes have found gainful employment writing opinion articles for our paper." Sulzberger went on to say that the Times is also employing an additional two dozen useless assholes as political reporters. "With the help of these useless assholes," he continued after the first announcement, "the New York Times will continue to to treat both sides of the issue the same with the same respect and dignity, even if one of them is a bunch comically-evil racists who blew up all three branches of the government and would probably murder your dog if they got the chance." Sulzberger then went on to emphasize how the New York Times will promise to inform the public of the truth as soon as possible, so long as none of their journalists want to save the story for a lucrative book deal. Upon further investigation, our fact-checkers at The Onion were able to confirm that the quality of the New York Times' articles has not dropped at all.
