Police departments wouldn't spend millions a year on PR if public perception of the job didn't matter—and not only for current officer morale, but also for recruitment.

Keep going.
“The frustration isn’t yet producing mass resignations or major internal protests, but the officers and agents described a workforce on edge, vilified by broad swaths of the public and bullied by Trump officials demanding more and more,” Nick Miroff writes.
Trump loves ICE. Its Workforce Has Never Been So Miserable.
A “mission impossible” deportation campaign has left many employees burned out and morally conflicted.

This. The narratives or arguments that separate out “criminal” from “innocent” immigrants (this includes when media and politicians emphasize stories of “perfect victims”) are bad—it implies that some people are actually deserving of criminalization and deportation, of cruelty and violence.

there's always money for incarceration imperialism and policing it's the literal reason the state is able to print as much money as the ruling class wants but when it comes to funding life-giving public programs suddenly there's national debt to consider and a budget to balance. fuck the state.
the money they're giving to ice could house every single homeless person in america

it could pay for every single american's healthcare if we switched to single payer M4A

it could pay for free lunches and breakfasts at every school in the country for a year and ensure no child goes hungry

How many times are we going to see the "former Marine gets hired for a job he never should have had" story play out? Maybe training a bunch of men to be racist killing machines isn't working out well for society at large. Usually they just get away with it because they're cops, not lifeguards.
