Almost 5 years in the making... "Hyperparameter Optimization in Machine Learning" is finally out! 📘

We designed this monograph to be self-contained, covering: Grid, Random & Quasi-random search, Bayesian & Multi-fidelity optimization, Gradient-based methods, Meta-learning.

“Everybody in math and physics uses it.”

Nearly 35 years ago, Paul Ginsparg created arXiv, a digital repository for sharing research. It changed science for good.

Three decades in, Ginsparg reflects on its legacy—and its future.
Inside arXiv—the Most Transformative Platform in All of Science
Modern science wouldn’t exist without the online research repository known as arXiv. Three decades in, its creator still can’t let it go.

*Please repost* @sjgreenwood.bsky.social and I just launched a new personalized feed (*please pin*) that we hope will become a "must use" for #academicsky. The feed shows posts about papers filtered by *your* follower network. It's become my default Bluesky experience bsky.app/profile/pape...

Unbelievable news.

Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers.

New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care.

Why 'I don’t know' is the true test for AGI—it’s a strictly harder problem than text generation!

This magnificent 62-page paper (arxiv.org/abs/2408.02357) formally proves AGI hallucinations are inevitable, with 50 pages (!!) of supplementary proofs.

I’m teaching a grad course for the first time (a bit terrifying 😅) and I’ve decided to write a short blog post after each lecture, that will highlight a key takeaway from it and reflect on what can be improved.

I rarely dunk, but this is exactly why @mjcrockett.bsky.social and I write about /illusions/ of understanding in our paper about AI and knowledge production.

I'm very excited to share notes on Probabilistic AI that I have been writing with @arkrause.bsky.social 🥳

arxiv.org/pdf/2502.05244

These notes aim to give a graduate-level introduction to probabilistic ML + sequential decision-making.
I'm super glad to be able to share them with all of you now!
