Fish, both saltwater freshwater, were more than just food but also a form of gift and currency between communities on the coast and on the interior. Coastal people traded dried fish, dried edible seaweed, and shark oil in return for forest products and sometimes forest game. 5/8

Freshwater fishes and rivers and streams, played a big role Māori diet and culture. Weirs were on rives and lakes made to catch lamprey (family Geo­triidae); eels (family Anguillidae); southern graylings and smelts(family Retropinnid). 4/8

Fishing was a seasonal activity shaped by the movements and behavior of the various fish species. Coastal fish like tāmure (snapper) tarakihi, pōrae (trumpeter fish), rāwaru or taipua (rock cod), kehe (marble fish) and kumukumu (gurnard) during the spring and summer. 3/8

#Māori are the Indigenous Peoples of #Aotearoa ( #NewZealand) who fished in various environments as marine and freshwater resources were of great value to their communities. All fishing grounds, banks, and rocks were specially named. Some were several kilometers out to sea. 2/8
