In the end I decided contributing to that debate would probably not be good for my reputation and just left the edit as-is. Although I'll admit that this decision was influenced by the fact that the citation was only partially reformatted, so still counts towards my live edits.

I just lost two full hours working why someone had felt the need to reformat my templated citation of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. As it turns out, there has been a lively and passionate debate about some of the quirks of that template going on for the past five years.
