Since I don't see many Directors on here revealing their hard earned secrets, I thought I'd attempt to fill the void. Here's a bit of what I've learned over the past 18 years, from Directing shorts in and out of film school, through Directing a couple Indie Features.

@crobertcargill.bsky.social Black Phone 2: Dream Warriors at Outpost 13 was the best time I've had at a horror movie in years. Bless you, SD and the whole team.

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.
Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink

Studio Ghibli Sunday at the Lawrence House. Been fun going through Miyazaki's filmography with the boys. They love all of these so far.

Art is freedom. Art is rebellion. It is defiance. There are people who don't feel a thing. Hollow men. We put them in charge of our souls.

I can legitimately tell how good a script is based on the first ten pages. The best scripts all do this early: establish the world, characters, conflict, jeopardy, and stakes. And it all plays seemlessly, is compelling, and original. Outside of concept, this is what you're up against.

13th Warrior
Speed Racer
Dredd
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Iron Giant
Babylon

I dunno, man. There are a lot.
A quick question for anybody who wants to answer, just because I'm trying to get my creative juices flowing...

What's your favorite movie or movies that was a box office flop? I'm not talking about like "Man of Steel made $700 million rather than $1 billion," I'm talking about movies that bombed.

Collectors new and old tell Rolling Stone there's nothing quite like the feel of holding your favorite art in your hands.

I like using bolded sluglines because I tend to do a lot of crosscutting in my screenplays, and I dont want anyone to skip over a scene heading and then be lost.

Finding myself writing super long dialogue scenes in this script because I'm scared to kill characters off.

It's funny to me how much Gilroy avoided aliens, characters in helmets or masks, and anything remotely space fantasy.

My brother sent me some warhammer lore videos as a gas and now im fully sucked in. Some have super high end narration and image work like a Ken Burns doc. This is a rabbit hole I dont need, but am compelled to explore god dammit.

Big fan of Patrick Schwarzenegger's work. For those not paying attention, he's made really interesting choices since he got in the game. A favorite of mine is his role as the demonic imaginary friend in the Indie Horror film Daniel Isnt Real.
