my biggest issue with it is that they don't prioritize characters based on how likely you are to see them, they do it based on character difficulty so you end up learning a lot of obscure kanji that isn't immediately useful and doesn't compliment your spoken / colloquial vocabulary learning journey.

It could be the idea of a dedicated device but I think if free "zero framelag" / "cycle accurate" emulators existed for machines that people already own, I think that would overpower the idea of an extra paid-for dedicated device for most people. i.e. like bsnes but never skips due to OS scheduling.

That's a good addendum. My point should have acknowledged that writing gateware can paradoxically require less effort when reimplementing logic that was originally in hardware. "Cycle-accurate" realtime code requires some ingenuity but I don't think the decreased difficulty is the major driver there

PALCEs were expected to last 10-20 years under normal conditions, unlike the mask ROM which is expected to last forever under normal conditions.
