As for me, I feel compelled to recommit myself to the non-violent tradition of political activism that has long animated my own beliefs. In the tradition of John Lewis, I believe the way through troubling times is with strength, solidarity, character, and love.

Political violence is not new, but today's events, to me, feel like we are stepping further into chaos and moving into an even more troubling period in the public life of our nation and possibly this community.

The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech from government intervention against the People. This freedom coincides with a civic tradition which calls for a free exchange of ideas in civil discourse. A functioning democracy requires such exchanges.
