it was second hand and it was that yellow-greenish "used computer" color (everyone smoked). my mom took out a bank loan to buy a laser printer around this time (we had a daisy wheel and a dot matrix printer of course for "THE BUSINESS")

Great lamp!! The secret was I found a chain that screwed in. that was key-- the bolt and chain was ebay or etsy. The glass shade was believe it or not from an old Cadillac dealers . . ..and for the innards I use an old ikea fixture and an Edison bulb, it's been completely fine

Whitey's is a mid-west border-culture deity. Like Dom Pep's or Umberto's. It's seedy gangster shit and also entirely respectable. Much more than a restaurant, it's a book waiting to be written (my grandmother worked at Whitey's as a young woman, about the age my daughter is now which is terrifying)

I look at the free section every day in hopes of catching a masterpiece like this:

A screenshotted craigslist ad from the free section. The post has an image with a lurid, impossible tableau, featuring many animals that would not typically associate so closely (bears, bald eagle, moose, alongside deer) congregated together cheek-by-jowl, all standing in a fantastical watering hole rendered in truly outlandish, sunset-like colors. The text reads "FREE Six Nature and wildlife calendars. Just email me with the exact time/earliest time you will pick up today (Saturday). Only respond if you're serious and can drive over right away. The sooner the better. The sooner the better. The sooner the better." The repetition of the last sentence gives the entire image an eerie, odd quality. The map at upper right shows the poster of the ad is in the South Lakes Reston, VA area of western Fairfax County, one of the most affluent and educated areas of the entire country (if not the world). A luridly colored calendar image showing an impossible group of animals close together at a mirror-like watering hole. Some kind of miniature zebra, a miniature lion, a giraffe, elephant and a cheetah are rendered in garish, inappropriately bright "candy-colors" that couldn't appear in nature. The proportions of the picture are faintly wrong. A large mountain towers above a neon-green savannah. The trees seems to be of the wrong type.
