When an Old English infinitive was used with 'to', its form changed:

- Iċ sċeal ETAN (I shall EAT)
- Iċ begann tō ETENNE (I began to EAT)

This was its dative case.

Yes, even infinitives had case back then!

Frisian still does this:
- Ik sil ITE
- Ik begûn te ITEN

The origin of the word 'cat' is unknown.

There are similar words in many related languages, such as French 'chat', Welsh 'cath', Polish 'kot', but also in unrelated languages, e.g. Arabic 'qiṭṭa' and Turkish 'kedi'.

However, none of these languages can be identified as the source.

Csaó magyarok!

I am learning Hungarian with Duolingo and a couple textbooks. I’m not ready for conversations yet, but would love to connect with some Hungarians so I can have people to talk to when the time is right!

Many commentators say that vigilante groups are never the answer. But they clearly don't know about the masked Ecuadorian trio named “Acción Ortográfica Quito,” who roam the streets at night with a singular purpose: to correct all the spelling and grammar mistakes they find in graffiti.
