Reading River Kings by @catjarman.bsky.social and very much enjoying the picture of 200 Vikings trying to raid Paris for wine and being unsuccessful. NEVER GET BETWEEN THE FRENCH AND THEIR WINE, lads!

Completely obsessed with these incredible animals. This is Andora, the most inquisitive of the four. There’s a lot going on in that little head! She’s food obsessed, but still a little too shy to eat from my hand. Getting there!

You can see our alpacas if you visit Althorp this summer!

This was the most incredible birthday present - a complete surprise!! Thank you @charlesspencer.bsky.social, I love them! 😍
New neighbours have moved in at Althorp - a quartet of beautiful alpacas. Incredibly positive and happy energy emanating from them - everyone here smiles when they set eyes on them. Happy birthday, @catjarman.bsky.social - these are for you!

It’s MS awareness week and recently, @charlesspencer.bsky.social and I attended an event at the Houses of Parliament arranged by the MS Society. We were there to speak to over 140 MPs, Lords and MPs’ staff about the realities of the 150 000 people living with this devastating condition in the UK.

Student 1: “I’m only on chapter 1 and there’s a mass grave, a guy missing his *you know* and four kids that might have been human sacrifices .”

Student 2: “You ARE taking a class with Amy.”

Really excited for the Althorp Literature Festival 11-13 April. We have some fantastic speakers: my favourite is the wonderful Bernard Cornwell, who is coming over from the US especially for this.
There are still a few tickets available - please help spread the word!

Unsolicited writing advice, no: 73:
Stop calling yourself an "aspiring writer."
Just write.
Now, you're a writer.
Keep writing, reading, observing, learning.
Soon, you'll be a better writer.

Delighted to hear the German edition of River Kings came out well - thank you for this lovely review @domwass.bsky.social!
Today, my review of @catjarman.bsky.social’s book ‘River Kings’ (or, rather, its German translation ‘Flusskönige’) has been published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In short: go and read the book (if you haven’t already)!

A watery-theme today at Winchester Cathedral with whales, mermaids, monarchs holding back waves, ships , and a contemplative soggy statue. Check out ‘The Bone Chests’ by @catjarman.bsky.social to learn more about the monarch’s remains!

Agree - this is really important context for understanding the world the Rus/Vikings were part of!
Fascinating thread - I always knew there was so much more to Ibn Fadlan, but didn't have the knowledge really to understand it.
Testing BlueSky’s capacity for historical threads!

A thread about my recent paper on Ibn Fadlan, (not) the Vikings, & 10th c. Eurasian trade & diplomacy.

Read if you like medieval history, Middle Eastern history, Iranian history, numismatics, economic history, & investigative historiography! 1/?

A fragment of #Roman terracotta pottery, into the surface of which someone a incised a sketch portrait of a man, some 1900+ years ago - a very round-headed bald man, with a big nose & bushy eyebrows. This is one of my favourite pieces of ancient graffiti! 🏺AncientBlueSky #Archaeology
